The mobile phone OS is one of the most integral part of any smartphone out there now; it’s the one that holds everything together. If somehow someone or a party would be able to open this up–everything’s up in the air. It’s up to the OS makers to ensure that the right people get access to it.
One of the OS that seems to attract a lot of attention from hackers is the iPhone OS. Maybe it’s because Apple’s always had this concept of invulnerability to such attacks that made hackers go for them immediately. Unfortunately, sometimes it’s an inherent and extremely dangerous flaw coming from the side of the OS creators that seem to be the problem here.
Here’ s a couple of videos of how easy it is to get inside an iPhone 3GS even without jailbreaking it:
Scary if you have one already, eh? According to Jonathan Zdziarski, an iPhone developer and a hacker who teaches forensics courses on recovering data from iPhones,:
“It is kind of like storing all your secret messages right next to the secret decoder ring. I don’t think any of us [developers] have ever seen encryption implemented so poorly before, which is why it’s hard to describe why it’s such a big threat to security.”
However some businesses seem to have weighed the security risk over the convenience of using an iPhone 3GS. According to Lance Kidd, chief information officer of Halton Company, an industrial equipment provider:
“Your organization has to be culturally ready to accept a certain degree of risk,” Kidd said. “I can say we’ve secured everything as tight as a button, but that won’t be true…. Our culture is such that our general manager is saying, ‘I’m willing to take the risk for the value of the applications.’”
Applications over data security? In this day and age, information is coveted by a lot of parties: this can range from your ordinary advertising agency wanting to know how they can manipulate you into buying their products to people who want to sell your precious information to the highest bidder.
The iPhone is extremely nice and has already changed the standard for smartphones everywhere. Let’s hope apple’s going to do something about the OS security soon.
