The fight between the current giants of the mobile phone world, Apple and Palm, is really gearing up! This time looks like the fight will be on the gaming grounds, however Apple’s iPhone seems to have the first lap one as the news below will show.
Palm limited in gaming
…Craig A. Hunter, a self proclaimed “pretty dedicated iPhone developer” who’s been poking around the WebOS SDK, Palm does not provide the environment to develop serious games or the kind of sophisticated apps users now expect from their handhelds. Chief among his concerns is lack of OpenGL access despite the hardware supporting it. Palm also limits devs to a 4Hz sampling of raw accelerometer data, far short of the 20Hz minimum required for games utilizing tilt control.
We guess that if your smartphone isn’t fun enough to do some gaming, then it is isn’t enough. The Palm was developed first as a business device or gadget and other features later, so we wouldn’t be surprised that Palm focused on that first. Besides, there’s been signs in the internet that Palm is seeking:
…for developers who are passionate about gaming, handhelds, mobile communication and the possibilities for Palm in the gaming arena. The software developers we’re looking for will have strong mathematical/analytical skills and will be effective team members in a small, focused initiative.
Yes, they are looking for game engineers who can work with Palm’s limited settings. Imagine a Wii going up against a PS3–that’s what we’ll be seeing here.
Pac-man Remix for the iPhone and iPod
On the Apple front, the iPhone just got a classic game that most 30 year olds and above will remember playing: Pac-man. It’s going to be called, Pac-man Remix.

Featuring an angled overhead 3-D view, the game is similar to the Pac-Man Arrangement game found on Namco Museum Battle Collection for the PSP, and adds maze traps, the ability to jump, and a number of power-ups to the classic Pac-Man gameplay. Additional features include a choice between on-screen, flick-, and accelerometer-based controls, six unique boss characters, and stage-specific gadgets.
It’ll be available in a few weeks and will cost at around $6. Both the iPhone and iPod Touch will be able to play it.
Who will in this war? The consumers will!
