In the world of mobile phones, news and drama seem to be the norm. And it even gets bigger when you talk about the iPhone 3GS and the Palm Pre.
Apple blocks Google Voice
If people think that Apple’s iPhone 3GS is great, they should imagine what it would be like when it has Google Voice installed in it. People in WiFi-enabled environments would be calling and texting their friends until the phone ran dry.
Unfortunately it won’t happen because of certain parties who feel thay’ll be left out in the cold and lose profits when it does. And that party might be AT&T.
Of course, it’s not hard to guess who’s behind the restriction: our old friend AT&T. Google Voice scares the carriers. It allows users to send free SMS messages and get cheap long-distance over Google Voice’s lines. It also makes it trivial to switch to a new phone service, because everyone calls the Google Voice number anyway.
It was rather surprising that Apple would make such a move when Phil Shiller, Apple SVP, approved the app last April. This even further lends the idea that it wasn’t Apple’s idea to block Google Voice. How big of an influence is AT&T to have such a giant company compel to such requirements? More internet/tech drama on the way, I’ll bet.
Verizon confirms: We’ll have Palm as well
On the other side of the smartphone world, the Palm Pre has been confirmed donning the Verizon colors in a few months. You guys remember that we reported on someone installing Verizon on their Sprint-exclusive Palm Pre? Well, it looks like that guy’s efforts will be in vain as someone from the higher-ups just mentioned it:
The company’s chief operating officer, Denny Strigl, spilled the beans on the impending smartphone availabilityduring a conference call with analysts and investors discussing the company’s second-quarter earnings on Monday. The Palm Pre, which was highly anticipated for several months, is currently only available on Sprint Nextel’s network.
When Verizon mentioned a few months ago, that they MIGHT be getting the Palm Pre as well, Sprint basically retorted that it was no way gonna happen in six months. Well, the six months will be over in a few months so…
