Toshiba is still fighting to be on top. Despite their setback with HD-DVD, they are still going at it with their laptops and other products that continue to push the envelope. Here is another one they have come up with – a 7,200 RPM 2.5” 500GB hard drive.

While half-terabyte and terabyte hard drives have been around for a while, their quality is questionable. Perhaps our expectations may have been too much in terms of what Toshiba may have cooking next, but this just means that storage capacities are definitely getting bigger. Ever since SATA came to the forefront and replaced IDE as the standard, things have gone way up from there.

External drives became the norm and it has become the ultimate portable storage solution, along with USB flash drives. Not needing another cable for power, just relying on power from the USB port is mind-boggling, but it actually works. Now, having 500GB with that portability will cause seizures amongst the geek population for ages until terabytes become the new standard. If you want to replace your little 120GB hard drive in your laptop, then this is it.

Most hard drives with this much capacity tend to be only at 5,400 RPM, meaning that file access is pretty slow. But with 7,200 RPM, you have less delay between spin-down and spinning back up again when you suddenly get the urge to play a game after taking a nap with your laptop still on. It is no problem at all as long as you maintain it properly. Think about all the stuff you can put into such a storage device. Toshiba also says that this will have a 13% performance increase over their previous 7,200 RPM hard drive line, so it means that it is even better than most hard drives in the market.

While prices are still undetermined, production will fully commence by the fourth quarter of 2009. It should be available for notebooks and netbooks early 2010, so start saving up to replace the hard drive that came with your laptop for this one.
